ArtWayz: On the Road with Art
Following a peripatetic childhood between the US and Mexico, ArtWayz is a digital diary created by Maia Furchtenicht in 2025 to document the lives of the various artists that have come to shape Oaxaca’s artistic community. The impact of these artists has extended beyond Mexico, gaining widespread international recognition for their unique creative worldview.
Having spent her formative years in Oaxaca, art would form the cornerstone of the author’s education and life path. An apprenticeship in 2018 with the respected painter Ivonne Kennedy brought her into contact, at a young age, with the old guards and luminaries of contemporary Mexican Art.
At present, the energy of Oaxaca’s creative community is underpinned by the legacy of its artistic heritage and the cultural vastness shaped by over sixteen Indigenous groups who have made their home in the valleys of Oaxaca since time immemorial. The contemporary art scene in Oaxaca, Mexico, holds international relevance as it fosters a dynamic blend of indigenous traditions and modern innovation, attracting global artists and visitors while engaging with pressing social and political issues. ArtWayz is an intimate portrait of the life, vision, and influence of the various personages enriching Oaxaca's artistic milieu.
